Timothy Tornado

We met a new Quirkle friend today!

Timothy Tornado taught us all about tornadoes!
We know they can be dangerous.
It is important to take cover and find a safe place to hide away from windows!

We learned that a tornado is formed when cold air and warm air meet.  The warm air rises and the cold air tries to sink causing the two to push against each other.  The warm air finds a weak spot in the cold air and it shoots up to the sky causing a whirling wind.

We made Timothy Tornado's Mini Tornado!

We used a bottle of water,

 glitter,

and clear dish soap.

We put them all together and made sure the lid was on tight!

We turned the bottle upside down.

Then we rotated the bottle in a clockwise motion.

We stopped to see what would happen.

A mini tornado formed inside the bottle.
The twirling caused the water to rotate in a circular motion.

We learned that tornadoes move very fast.
They are funnel shaped clouds that reach down from a storm cloud and touch the surface of the Earth.

We learned that the center of a tornado is called the vortex.

The vortex has a lot of energy.

We know that tornadoes are very strong

and they can be very dangerous.

Now that we know how tornadoes work we can stay alert and on the look out.

We had lots of fun!

Thanks for teaching us about tornadoes, Timothy Tornado!
