HALLOWEEN FUN!

Remember tomorrow is Monster Mash! The children will perform in the gym at 12:00. They are so excited and would love for you to come and see! Students can wear their costumes, but please send a change of clothes or they may wear clothes under their costumes. Although we have some fun activities planned it is not a (FMNV) holiday. We will not be having a Halloween party and cannot eat treats or Halloween goodies at school. Thank you for your understanding! We are looking forward to having some great Halloween fun tomorrow!

Parent Conferences- Monday, October 29

Parents, Please remember there will be no school on Monday, October 29th!! I look forward to discussing your child's progress at our parent/teacher conferences! Have a great weekend! Thanks! Mrs. Janak

Fun with READING!!!

It's fun to read in Kindergarten!!! Our favorite way to read is "like a BOSS"! We put our feet up on the table and lean back in our chairs. We also like to read with a PaPa bear voice, like a cowboy or even whisper reading! We encourage parents to make reading fun at home! Here are some strategies to practice to help your child become a fluent reader! Picture Walk: Have your child look at the pictures and tell you what they think is happening in the story. Word Walk: Have your child go through the book and look for words they know. They might be sight words, or words they can blend. Discuss/review reading strategies: What are we going to do if we get to a word we don’t know? Do not skip it, use the pictures to help you, sound it out, figure out a word that makes sense, get your mouth ready to say it, look for a little word in the big word Model Fluent Reading: Have your child finger point as you read a page. Tracking the words with their finger as they read is a very important step in learning to read fluently. Then have your child reread the page without you! Read Chorally: Have your child finger point as they read together with you. Continue reading each page. Individual Reading: Have your child read pages while you listen. As you listen to your child provide support and encourage looking for word clues if they stumble on a word they do not know!(EXAMPLE: what letter does it begin with…….so what sound will it begin with? Is it a sight word? ) Thank you for your support in helping your child become a happy, excited, fluent reader!

Susie Sound

Today Mrs. Raemsch's puppy pals visited and we all read about Susie Sound and the Quirkles. We learned that sound is actually waves of energy. Susie Sound's Musical Glasses Experiment We poured different amounts of water in four of the same size drinking glasses. We concluded that the glass with the most water had the highest pitch and the glass with the least water had the lowest pitch. According to the Quirkles, "When the air column is shorter, the air vibrates faster and the pitch is higher. As the height of the air column gets higher, the pitch of the sound gets lower." This was a "fun learning experiment"!!! We can't wait to meet "Pressure Pete" next week!!

The childre were very excited to meet "Mr. E" and can't wait until the next time he comes back to our classroom!

Fall is Fun!!

Too Many Pumpkins!! We love pumkins and can't wait to carve a Jack-o-lantern. Halloween is around the corner!!

Dr. Jean is the BEST!!!

Last week I was able to learn some new tricks and techniches about activating the children's brain. Dr. Jean always has refreshing ideas! Dr. Jean believes... Learn on your feet and not on your seat. Get ‘em up and get ‘em movin’. 90% of kids learn best by doing Music is the most convenient way to learn anything. Children need frequent “brain breaks” and “exercise snacks”! Teachers can have fun too!!
Get that blood flowing, get your heart going, move those arms and legs and WAKE UP your BRAIN!

Thank You!

As we come to the end of these nine weeks I would like to thank all parents for your continuous support at school and at home. The interaction you have with your child allows for great success. Please continue to encourage learning at home through reading and homework. With your help, your child will continue to have a great year. Please return the conference note so that we can schedule a progress conference for your child. I am looking forward to meeting with you. Thanks for your support! Mrs. Janak

Fun with Letter "T" and TORNADOS

We met this week's Quirkle friend, Timothy Tornado! "The thing Timothy does best is teach his friends about tornados and tornado safety." We learned that a tornado begins when a cold air mass blows over a warm air mass. According to the Quikles, "After time, the hot air finds a weak spot in the cold air and shoots up like a fountain in the sky. This creates a mighty, whirling wind." Timothy Tornado's Mini Tornado
We filled a bottle with water, added two drops of dish detergent and a teaspoon of glitter. We took turns turning the bottle upside down and rotating it in a clockwise motion. We found that the circular motion of the bottle created the appearance of a tornado. Tornados can be very dangerous! We learned how to stay safe in a tornado by taking cover!!! The Quirkles Series were written by Terri Johnson and Sherry Cook and published by Frog Street Press. www.frogstreet.com

We learned about kinetic energy (motion)!

We read about Mary Motion and met the Quirkles. We love to explore phonics through science!!! Mary motion and her other "M" friends had a marble race to see which marble rolled the farthest. We had our own marble race!!
We set up two ramps using blocks. One ramp was twice as steep as the other one. We predicted that the taller ramp would be the fastest. We took turns rolling the marbles down the ramps to see which marble rolled the farthest. Conclusion: We learned that the marble that rolls down the steepest ramp travels the farthest. The higher the ramp the more energy the marble has to change motion! This was FUN!!! We can't wait to meet our next "Quirkle" friend!
