Happy Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated at the turn of the Chinese calendar. In China, it is also known as the Spring Festival, the literal translation of the modern Chinese name. Chinese New Year celebrations traditionally run from Chinese New Year's Eve, the last day of the last month of the Chinese calendar, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month, making the festival the longest in the Chinese calendar. Because the Chinese calendar islunisolar, the Chinese New Year is often referred to as the "Lunar New Year".

YEAR OF THE HORSE

We made horse hats to celebrate "the year of the HORSE"!

One of our very own students lived in China!
She shared some Chinese treasures with us including clothing, a dragon banner and drum!
We also enjoyed some yummy cookies decorated in red to celebrate the Chinese New Year!
Thanks for sharing!

We made red lanterns to keep "NIAN", the Chinese monster away!  In china, a festival is held where music and dancing takes place.  Red decorations are made.  It is said that NIAN does not like the color red or loud noises.  The Chinese continue to make loud noises using instruments and fireworks as well as hang lanterns along the streets to scare away this Chinese monster.

We practiced using CHOP STICKS!

We enjoyed some Chinese favorites including steamed rice, lo mien, soy sauce and mandarin oranges.

We had fun learning about the Chinese New Year!

We had fun writing POP, reading POP, but most of all we loved tasting POP!
