Fall Fun on Halloween

We had lots of fun learning today!  We had some fun activities to do with our pumpkin!

We visited the nurses office and borrowed the scale to weigh our pumpkin.
We found out that our pumpkin weighed 8.5 pounds.

Do pumpkins "sink" or "float"?

We wanted to know the answer to the question, so we decided to do an experiment.
First, we had some very thoughtful ideas that might give a us a clue.

Matter: Matter is something that takes up space.
The pumpkin takes up space!
Matter can be a solid, liquid or a gas.

Most students first shouted that it was a solid, however, then they began to think.
Pumpkins are hollow (a hole inside).  That must mean there is air...which means there is gas.

Now will it sink or float?
Some students thought it would sink because it was heavy.
However, some made the connection that because there is air inside it would float.

 Look!  Pumpkins float!

Cleaning our Pumpkin
It felt sticky and slimy.
We each counted 10 seeds to take home.

Meet 8 and 1/2 pound, Mr. Pumpkin!

 Clifford has a new friend!

Happy Halloween!!!
